Top sport meets art: from interior design to artwork 'Amsterdam'

Topsport meets Kunst: van interieurontwerp naar kunstwerk ‘Amsterdam’

Sports professional and speaker lives in the picturesque village of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel Axel Koenders. He's been active in elite and recreational sports for 45 years, and to celebrate that—and because his birthday was coming up—he ordered a large limited edition print of my artwork "Amsterdam."

The original has since been sold, but the print—made by Re-Art—is virtually indistinguishable from it and has now found a prominent place at Axel. The work depicts the canal houses of Warmoesstraat, seen from Dam Square towards Central Station. This artwork is made up of an estimated 5,000 pieces of leftover material : cables, plugs, broken sunglasses, old buttons—all woven together into a single image.

What makes this even more special? Years ago, I helped Axel with an interior design. The fact that my art is now integrated into this design makes our collaboration extra special. Sporty precision meets authentic craftsmanship.

Axel gives lectures and advice to companies, associations, and educational institutions on how to optimally prepare for endurance events. His world revolves around movement, discipline, and performance—just like my world of art, color, and reuse.
Axel, have fun with 'Amsterdam' — a work of art that perfectly captures what you stand for.
